Re: Particle counters?

European houses don't have forced air systems like the USA. So this is not an option. There is no ducting in any houses except the latest and greatest "zero energy" houses which are completely sealed and must have a forced system. :-) In most of Spain, where I now live, you are surprised i...

Re: Downdraft table - suction?

The fan in our kitchen extractor is so loud that we scarcely ever turn it on. :-) When we replace it, I will not be re-using it for this.

Re: Honeycomb Tops

I think there must be a few posts by Alain Bieber about this. I recall one of his experiments where discussed clues. One issue was foaming.

Downdraft table - suction?

Check my logic please. I will be making myself some sort of downdraft table in the near future. The simplest option is just to plug in one of my workshop vacuum cleaners. However these are very noisy but I don't have anything else at the moment. So that is step one. But there may be a later "Pl...

Particle counters?

I find that dust is bothering more than in the past. I do take precautions but I don't have anything to measure the effects (apart from my lungs :-)). I did a few searches this morning and found a range of counters and air quality meters. Prices from about $20 to $7000+. All seem to work with a lase...

Re: Inside mold

The StewMac 000 and D kits come with a cardboard inside mould. I found them quite good so I have nothing against inside colds. However, for classicals I have only ever used a solera and I don't use any mold with it. Nowadays I use some wooden right angles at a few points around the perimeter but whe...

waxed vs de-waxed shellac for FP?

Until now I have always used a blonde/superblonde de-waxed shellac. I got a small amount of what appears to be a waxed shellac recently. Compared to my usual shellac, the flakes dissolved almost instantly but the mix is cloudy. What should I be thinking about if I use this type? I just did a very br...

Re: Anyone used Rubio monocoat?

I read one of the technical docs earlier. In fact the parent company is from Belgium. Still never heard of it. EDIT I called the company selling it and asked about it. They told me that they sold it and the other oil finishes mainly to people doing wood turning. As a side note I also found out that...

Anyone used Rubio monocoat?

I spotted this on a Spanish suppliers website which suggests that at least some professionals are using it. It is some sort of oil finish and as the name suggests apparently need only one coat. It seems to be a US company and I have seen it referred to as RMC. I usually use shellac but at the moment...

Well that's good news. I suppose he does realise that "top of the line" acoustics cost US$25K-US$35K and more for special requests. (Symogyi and similar)

Re: New shop lights?

I got a pair of these* put in a few months back. Much pricier here (x2-x3 plus fitting) that in the link but I am quite happy with them. The electrical company who put them in recommended them. The main reason I got them fitted is that I had no ladders high enough to reach the ceiling and secondly t...

Re: Searching for a good respirator

An update on this. I find myself mainly using the cartridge type respirator and only ocassionally use the Trend. The two reason for not using the Trend is the top heavy issue I mentioned above. At least for me it is pretty much impossible to adjust it so that it stays put. As soon as I bend forward,...

Re: Thinking about a steel string ...

Thanks for the advice so far. I probably have the StewMac OOO plan somewhere so that would give me an X-Brace system but not a double X. It is always a bit tricky finding varnish/laquer equivalents across the atlantic but I will have a look. Actually come to think of it a neighbour here is involved ...

Thinking about a steel string ...

I basically just do classical guitars. Up around no 25-30 by now. I am currently experimenting in using ready made laminated parts. These are normally destined for factories. This morning I got the idea of trying a pair of acoustics on the same basis. The supplier also has ready made acoustic necks ...

The Sargent style is one of the type I consider hand agnostic. I will keep a look out for that style.

Left handed block planes? Or hand agnostic?

Hi, Has anyone come across a left hand block plane? I am thinking of the type with a pivot screw pressing the blade down. Recently I find that the screws kept opening up when I am using it as my left thumb touches it and opens it. My old Stanley had a different mechanism that wasn't as "handed&...

Re: Does the library search work for you?

Today even the first search was quite fast. In my case it might have been the https vs http. I generally set my browsers to try and force https so that could have caused an initial time-out. I have safari and have been using it for more than a decade. It is one of the suckiest browsers there is but ...

Re: Does the library search work for you?

The search works for me with a "but". When I do the first search it seems to hang up. Looks like it is not working at all. Eventually, feels like "forever" (maybe 1 min + :-)) the results get displayed. I actually gave up on the first test I had left the tab open so I spotted the...
