Re: Sound ports question
I have been pondering why sound ports are so popular,if unwanted higher resonances are present. I suspect that builders with way more knodedge and experience have tuned their tops to allow the sound ports to work for them.it is behond me so ill move away from the idea until i fully understand it.

Re: Sound ports question

Or glue the veneer on flat and then bend the side then rout?? Ive never used titebond III ,but another Canadian luthier said he liked it only when glui...

Sound ports question
I may have asked this but the answer didnt stick,my bad.
Should a sound port be routed before or after bending, and is a one layer backing veneer enough?
I was going to use titebond 3 since its moisture and heat resistanct??

Re: Fanned Fret Slotting Sled
I built my charlie hunter/novax style hybrid 8 string in 1998. The scales were 28.25 and 25.5.The nut and head stock were the tuffest part of the whole build.the compound angle for the trebles stopped the build for quite a while.i ended up fairing in the angle needed to keep the treble strings off t...

Re: Question on domed tops and backs
Ok question, why use 2 different radius dishes, is it tradition,or is there a tone or structure benifit.ive only built archtops and everything is different, so i really dont know much about it. I was asking a well known builder about doming for a harp guitar and a couple others also said that 30 foo...

Re: Harp guitar build
Yes this confirms what 2 other luthiers said that a slight dome ,maybe 30 ft radius (5/64), would be enough,as you dont want to over tention the top. One said he only domes his x brace in the lower bout only, other braces are flat, and he tapers back the hollow arm 1/2",this is to help with stri...

Harp guitar build
In diving into the harp guitar plans and i see ill need a radius dish for my sullivam elliot style harp guitar build.what im unclear on is how the dome transistions from radius to flat as it comes to the hollow arm. I was thinking a slight 25 foot radius dish would allow that transistion any suggest...
