Re: Fox Bender adventures

bent side.jpg Today I bent one side on the pipe. A lot of scorching but it is 1/8" so I hope to sand it out. I then set aside it match and went to a second set that was planed down a bit to .09-.10 and proceeded to break both. So now I am back to the other half which I will go after tomorrow. ...

I am finding that out. The cross grain just breaks. I used scraps of sapele to develop my skill on the 2" bending pipe. It burns but still doesn't bend.

Re: Fox Bender adventures

I have fashioned a 2" pipe bender with a propane torch and spent an hour last night bending scraps. Scorching is a big issue now but making progress. This works great... till it breaks. I plan to bend the waist and rough out the rest to get it into the bender and then smooth it out. I'm making ...

Re: Fox Bender adventures

There was no scorching at all.
Wood damp when I opened it 12 hrs later.

I think the heat is not building up properly.

Fox Bender adventures

Here are my first tries with junk wood sides. It will take a lot of faith to move on to my carefully crafted Weissenborn ribs. Looking for more junk wood to try. I brushed on water and wrapped in al foil. Baked for 45 min. Then clamped down. Using walnut and 3, 200 watt bulbs. Saw a picture long ago...

Re: Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

I read several reviews of the Grizzly 710 drum sander that is available here on chaigs list. Seems it will only go down to .25" A piece of 3/4" plywood gets around that. I used a neighbors Performax 6-7 yrs ago and don't remember that problem; rather being amazed the conveyor belt didn't c...

Truss rod choice for OM build

I am gathering materials for the OM feachered in Alex Willis book. The truss rod described at SM is just a 3/16 steel rod(plain or all thread) with a barrel nut which you can get at most hardware stores. Is this all I need? The Hotrod is more complex but do I need it? Just $16. This is my first guit...

Re: Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

Anybody have experience with the Grizzly 10" G0716. It is $415 with $75 shipping for a new one.

Nothing else comes close. But if it is junk it will do no good.

Re: wood choice for sound board on Weissenborn style.

Back in 2010-12 I followed a number of threads about wood used for Weissenborn tops. I can't find them now but several were experimenting with sapele and spruce. Even domestic hardwoods. I am wondering how they came out.

Re: Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

I have just finished putting together a fox side bender. I have made a lot of tools and refurbished others. Now I want to get back to wood working.

Considering a thickness sander. What to get?

I have been using a neighbors but now ready to get my own. I have re sawed a lot of sapele, walnut and maple and want to finish it up with a sander. Ten inches seems to be a cut off for size. That would work fine. Saw a Grizzle 10" on Craig's list. Looked at new models and realize all the brand...

I have quarter sawed walnut and sapele and stika spruce. The top can be mix of walnut and sapele or stika spruce....
