Re: interesting conclusions from a carefully designed test of glued joint

I watched the whole thing and I still disagree with the conclusion he draws. More specifically, how he words it. He says end grain glue joints are stronger than side grain joints. He has not demonstrated that at all. He has demonstrated that a beam with an end grain glue joint will take more force t...

Re: interesting conclusions from a carefully designed test of glued joint

I saw that video. Well most of it, I didn’t make it to the end. I felt like the conclusions he drew were misstated a bit. He made it sound like end grain glue joints were stronger than side grain or end to side because those samples took more force to separate than for the others to break. I’m not d...

Sorry, not sure why my post went up twice. Once before I fixed all the autocorrects and once after.

Re: Finally made a new soundhole/rossette cutter

Yes, I drilled and tapped the tuner post to accept the threaded rod, then fluxed and soldered them together. The center pin is in the slider, the wooden piece between the cutter assembly and the tail with the tuner. The threaded rod passes through the slider which has internal threads. The slider ha...

Finally made a new soundhole/rossette cutter

I have had this in the back of my head for years and finally got around to it. I pretty much designed it on the fly and would make some changes if I were to do it again. I wanted a lead screw type of adjustment to allow for fine adjustment. That was the one thing I didn’t like about the crappy one I...

Re: Masking bridge location

I do similar to above with some differences that bear explaining. I use French polish and have not really had any significant' buildup of the edge. Endouro-var is probably different in that regard. I tape off the bridge location with blue masking tape, clamp the bridge down and carefully score the t...

I felt like an idiot, then like an idiot for feeling like an idiot.

I recently got back to a rim that sat for a couple months. It is a cutaway on a shape that I have not made with a cutaway before. I carefully measured the mold and cut a slit that would allow the cutaway side to extend past the rim outline so that the bass side and heel block could glue up flush to ...

Re: A moment

I fully understand the sentiment of what you are saying but my experience is slightly different. My first few instruments (non-Gitar) went pretty much as you describe. But now days, I experience this joy a little differently. I am still always pleased to hear something I made making lovely sound/mus...

Re: Lining Clamps

I use clothes pins with rubber bands wrapped around them to get more clamping force. The dollar store supplied enough of each for a couple bucks. It would sure be nifty to have 100 of those metal ones though.

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

Ha! I know what you mean. My biggest concern for FP is that if we are only spending a couple hours per week together it will never get done. If I show him and send him home with what he needs to do it on his own it could be a real mess by the next week. I need to find something he can do without spr...

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

I’m going to follow his lead on how deep of a dive he wants to take and how ready he is. I’m hoping the process leads to conversations. I don’t want to be giving lectures, I want to be offering answers.

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

Good points Marshal. I have an excel worksheet with all of the points in my process listed as well as which other points need to be completed before you can do a step. I really only use it when I am boarded at work. Sometimes I will pull it up and look at which steps I am able to do and come up with...
