Re: Whacky, weird and wonderful wood.
I don't understand your reasoning Barry. I have seen countless exampls of wind swirling one direction or the other (even verry gentle breezes) due to the geometry of the environment. Surely you are not crediting the rotation of the earth for the little leaf tornados you see in the corners of buildin...

Re: Whacky, weird and wonderful wood.
I’m not so sure the Coreolis effect is very important to something as small as a leaf in a wooded area. There are certainly many more local influences that will have a larger effect. Coreolis has a big influence on large things like weather patterns. Water doesn’t ALWAYS spin the same way in sink dr...

Re: Tutorials
I think I suggested this when the new forum went up (at least I meant to). I think a good model would be to encourage people to post photo essays of their methods for any particular task. The more mundane tasks will not likely be repeated ad-nauseum. These photo essays will be somewhat peer reviewed...

Re: Finally a use for all those pieces of scrap
Holy Molley! That is impressive. I don't think I will be attempting this anytime soon. I would love to see time laps photography of these reacting to changes in RH.

Re: Converting video to an uploadable format
It is a cannon ZR900. I misspoke earlier. I have an RCA cable out and the DV port (which I assume is a 4 pin FireWire. I can get one of those a external RCA components for about $60 that comes with editing software. It seams like using the high speed FireWire transfer would be better though. I saw a...

Converting video to an uploadable format
Disclaimer – I am by no means a technophile nor do I have interest in becoming one. This post will certainly be riddled with dumb questions. I am finding myself needing to post video form my older camcorder to the internet. I have tried pushing the camcorder into the monitor and that has had no succ...

Re: Wand-smithing
Nice work guys! My neice and nephew got some wands a few years ago (I wish I had taken some pictures). This thread has made me realize that it won't be long before my 5 year old is ready to get a wand. Then of course, our bun in the oven will need one some day too. Now I'm all excited!

Re: Measure guitar volume?
Darrel, I’m not convinced that perimeter and pi will be enough to calculate area of a guitar shaped object. I could be wrong since math is not my strong suit though. I have a rubber band sitting on my desk, the area it encloses is mostly round. If I squeeze it on two opposite sides, the circle (now ...

Re: Bending 1/4" thick banjo rim
My guess is that you are under cooking rather than over cooking. I doubt that a wallpaper steamer is able to make enough steam/heat for an 8x8x50 inch box. You may be getting it hot enough to make the outer surfaces pliable but the inside of the stock is not really at bending temperature. You are ab...

Re: Measure guitar volumn?
You need to calculate the area of the top (or back) and multiply by the depth. Assuming the sides are tapered, this complicates things. You could put the body shape on graph paper and tediously count out the squares and partial squared to get an estimate (better you than me). . . I'm not in the know...

I left an honor system bowl of candy out on the porch Does that work for you? Here, the first kids to the bowl just empty it and everyone else just sees an empty bowl. No smashed pumpkins in the road this morning!! Yep Chuck there are a number ouf houses in my subdivision that do this if they are n...

Re: Halloween and I'm ...
Chuck, last night I was on the opposite end of things. I don't think I sat down until 9:30 when I finally got to roast my own campfire hot dog. I trick-or-treated about 2 miles, the last 3/4 of a mile whith a 5 year old white tiger on my shoulders. By the time my group was tired enough to give up on...

Re: Acoustic Bass Guitar questions
Ah, thanks! For some reason when I read archives, my brain thought about the plans and templaets section of the library. I didn't even look at the discussions, my bad. I'll look at the discussions, but perhaps I should put this off further. I don't think I have teh chops for archtops yet, I would be...

Re: Acoustic Bass Guitar questions
I built two archtops using Bill Moll's dimensions in the archive. Darrel, that looks great and your descriptions of the results is intriguing. Where in the archive is this discussed? Or are the dimensions you mentioned what was in the archives? Is there any more info for someone who has never done ...

Nce to see you on to top making! Before you get too far along, make your bridge clamping caul now. It will be much easier to fit it to the bracing before you close the box. . .

Re: ?Custom made fret slotting blade (for table saw)?
As to satisfaction from doing it yourself, I thought I had a second degree acquaintance with a saw shop capable of doing this. All things equal, I would have preferred to send my money to a local business owner. . . It sounds like the various available blades have been working well with or without s...

Re: A fundamental design flaw...
If you are planning a production line, you need to design the bridge such that stringing is more foolproof. For testing, I was going to suggest something similar to Roger’s idea, but using a long curved (stiff) wire with a small loop on the end. You can put it in the pin hole and it will come up thr...
