Thanks Marshall. I'm not traveling at all these days, but I'll keep it in mind if I get down that way again.

Re: Good source for alder?

I have to drive 150mi round trip to get wood - I suppose it depends on where you're located. I go in person so I can look through it. Also, I only go when my wife wants to go shopping. :)

Re: ? Strength of fiber veneer between fretboard and neck

Thanks Ryan - that's a good alternative. I took Bob's suggestion to heart and made a very simple routing table using a generic workmate stand. The fence pivots on a screw and clamps on the other end. tsble-router.jpg router-fence.jpg This test piece has a 1/4" wide by 0.012" depth like I will do on ...

Re: ? Strength of fiber veneer between fretboard and neck

Thanks Bob and Barry. I hesitate to try to route it hand held as it's already slotted and radiused, so maybe a good excuse to mickey-mouse a routing table. If it fails, then I can just glue it with a sheet of fiber. But it will be awhile - I still have to do the head stock before I attach the fret b...

? Strength of fiber veneer between fretboard and neck

I've bound a fretboard with a darkish wood, similar in shade to the neck wood. To set it off I'd like a thin white purfling type line between the board and the neck. I should have thought of this before and attached it to the binding, but didn't. Now I'm thinking that if I glue a sheet of fiber vene...

Re: Doing fret board and head stock binding -questions

That's a nice system Randy, and one I'd be likely to try if I was planning on many more, but I'm just doing this as an interesting learning experience at this point. I'm getting old and probably don't have many more instruments in me, but I've got enough wood to last me the rest of my life. :)

Re: Doing fret board and head stock binding -questions

Thanks Bob. Unfortunately my radius blocks are home made and only about 8" long. If I attached the unbound but tapered fretboard to the untapered neck, I would need to find a good way to clamp the bindings. With the fret board off, I can just use two straight cauls against each binding against the b...

Doing fret board and head stock binding -questions

Not sure where to post this, but this looks as good as any.I've just done my first neck binding, and don't know what the best order of steps might be. I did it as follows: -Flatten and thickness fret board. -Cut fret slots (easier for me when the board is still square) -Shape/taper fret board to fin...

Re: Shipping guitars safely

I shipped two electric instruments from CA to CO last year via USPS, there was no problem insuring them (at that time), and the price was in the same ballpark as UPS. Each guitar was packed in its case, and the case was packed in a cardboard box, surrounded by several inches of bubble wrap on all si...

Re: Attach routing template to spruce top

Well, here I am 5 pandemic months later - nothing much has changed for me, I'm still a hermit. I've started building a couple more guitars, and have made the heel blocks incorporating the pocket in them. Only have to route a piece of the top away, and cut away part of a side. Hopefully the pics are ...

Re: Glue for colored veneer marquetry in spruce top

No wisdom here. I use CA for rosettes, which are thicker, so don't know how it would be for thin veneer pieces. I glue everything together with liquid wicked in, then go over gaps with gel.

Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?

I flatten/thickness the fretboard blank, cut the slots, glue it on the neck blank, shape and carve the neck/heel/hradstock to final dimensions, radius the fretboard, deepen the slots as necessarys, install the frets, level and dress the frets, install side dot markers. These are bolt-ons, so all don...

Re: Fender neck pockets - rectangular or tapered?

When I used to make Fender clones, I made templates for routing the neck pockets (bass, Tele or Strat) and templates for the necks. I routed the pockets first, then when I shaped the necks I finessed them for a tight fit (easier to shape the neck heel than the pocket). But yes, as noted above, they ...

Re: This guitar is mine!!!

Hi! This is my new guitar. In fact, I made this one to get better as I'm working on my friend guitar. SO there is twins guitar actualy. That's a nice looking guitar, Marc, and seems to be well made. Nice! Many times I make two guitars at once also, since I make them out of my head without any plans...

Re: Help! Confusion over non-functioning electronics

Can't say I know what I'm doing anymore (CRS disease), but for starters it looks like when any switch is "off", it grounds the output and any signal from the other pickups is also shunted to ground. So cut or remove those wires between the bottom lugs of the switches. Also, I'm not sure about the sy...

It's a Panasonic G5 with an old 50mm (100mm equivalent in a 4/3 camera) manual Nikkor lens. I bought an adapter a few years ago since I have a bunch of Nikon lenses from prehistoric days when everything was manual and I developed and printed myself. Exposure 13 sec, f/2.8, ISO 800. Subsequently I've...
