Re: MIMF Archtop Guitar Project

Is Louis not working on the neck? I read back through and it seems he began working on one?

Re: MIMF Archtop Guitar Project

John Hamlett has the body, but I understand he is busy settling into a "new" shop. We have no neck yet. Has the neck blank been supplied? I don't feel qualified to make the neck, but I've got to go and pick out some wood this week and I could pick up some maple for the neck/heel/heel bloc...

Re: Jacob Porter's Guitar-a-lele

Yes Hans. It's going to be a semi-hollow double neck instrument. One side will be a ukulele and the other will be a nylon string guitar. It will end up being more an electric than acoustic in that the size and depth of the instrument won't facilitate much acousticness.

Re: Jacob Porter's Guitar-a-lele

Okay. I got a little bit done towards getting this thing started. I took the fence pieces to the shooting board and then joined them together using Mario's tape method. I then cut some of the excess off when they had dried. I also cut some of the pallet slats to a rough length and width. I planed th...

Re: Guitar-a-lele

Okay. Got a little done. Decided that I needed something to make a top out of, and taking apart the piano seems pretty daunting right now, so I broke down and cut up a cedar fence picket. I know it's the wrong species, but it smells good! I did manage to get a couple of pictures. Really just startin...

Jacob Porter's Guitar-a-lele

Ok. I really couldn't decide what I wanted to build and I might run out of time with my other obligations right now, but heck, I'm in. I have some drawer fronts that my parents gave me from their new kitchen install as well as an old pallet that someone threw away back behind my house. I think those...

Re: The "Reclaimed Materials" Challenge- discuss rules here

Think I might like to be in on this. Currently have a lot of irons in the fire, so this probably won't get done, but I think it would be more fun to take part than not. I also have a pallet and an old piano hanging around that I've been wanting to do something with other than store stuff on in my ga...

Re: Customers in your shop

Thanks. This was the answer I was looking for. Guitar building shouldn't be a spectator sport.

Customers in your shop

Hi All, I'm starting in on my eighth build and am encountering a new thing for me. On previous builds, I have willing provided pictures of the customers' instruments during the build if they wanted them. On this build, the customer seems to want to be in the shop with me every opportunity he can. I'...

Re: What's a good flamenco plan for a newbie?

I've been using the santos Hernandez plans and have liked them. He was the precursor to Barbero and Reyes. Though Barbero is probably the closer sound to the Hernandez. All are great. Blackshear is still around and could likely answer questions if you have them. Edit: forgot to add that I'm a newbie...

Re: Let's design and build a better hygrometer, once and for all..!

I didn't see it in these posts, but did anyone think of using a thermometer like you would use to check a baby's temp? No, not the old ones that you more experienced fellows would suggest, but a newer one in which You push the button down and swipe it across the kid's forehead, or in this case some ...

Re: Adhesion issues with cocobolo

Thank y'all for the help. I got the board off with a hot butter knife and have now sanded the neck and board flat and clean of glue. Went ahead and applied new glue and clamped while still fresh. Now the waiting while I work. Thank you all again for the expert advice.

Adhesion issues with cocobolo

Ok, working on my fourth build and I'm using cocobolo for the fretboard. After carefully thicknessing, tapering, sanding, and then wiping the cocobolo with alcohol (multiple times with the alcohol), I glued it down with titebond. 24 hrs later, unclamping and the cocobolo can be separated from the ne...
