Re: neck fitting dovetail archtop

Hi Brain, I realize your original post was over a year ago and no doubt you've figured it all out by now but I'd appreciate hearing more about this. My understanding is that the DT joint should not be a tight fit initially so it is easier to fit the fret board neck extension to the body. Once that i...

Re: Martin X neck joint

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I don't have any confidence that the neck can be removed from the top without damaging or buckling the top - and as you'll see from the photos, the top has a print on it and I suspect that damaging that will be unavoidable. My gut feeling is to give the owner the...

Re: Martin X neck joint

Thanks Michael, appreciate that advice. The top of this one is 80% detached from the rim so lots of opening for the steam to escape but I'll keep it well ventilated. It also appears that the fret board is glued to the top. Is this the case? And if so how can the fret board be detached from the top? ...

Martin X neck joint

I have just received a Martin Hawaiian X that has had a serious mishap. Top is broken/cracked and 80% detached from rim. All HPL construction. Only hope of repair is to remove top and that means remove neck. Can anyone tell me how the neck is connected to the body? Web search so far comes up with &q...

Re: Very Old Ukelele Needs Work

Apologies for the delay in providing an update - got busy with a few other projects. Here are some photos of the finished repair. I trimmed the rough truncated end of the heel and drilled a hole through at an angle. It penetrated through into the body cavity. I then cleaned out the saw cuts as best ...

Re: Large Pick guard material

David, You solved my problem. Must have had a brain fade to not think about skewing the PG on the blank. I reckon it will just fit on a standard StewMac blank at 11 1/4" wide. And the grizzly ones you identified are 1/2" wider so they will definitely do it.

Large Pick guard material

Does anyone know where I can get large sheets of layered pick guard material. I need a piece of tortoise shell laminate 12.5" square for a Ovation Deacon pick guard.

Re: Very Old Ukelele Needs Work

Chris, Thanks for all of that information and your repair ideas. ;) Steve, There is no binding anywhere. I think what looks like binding is just the edge grain of the back. It appears that the end of the heel (heel cap) has been sawn off. I guess if it was an extension of the back the butcher cut it...

Very Old Ukelele Needs Work

Hello, I have been asked to get this old uke playable again and before I touch it I would like some advice for anyone who knows more about these than I do. It looks to be very old. The badly worn label on the head stock appears to have the year 1915 on it. The brand appears to have the letters: K?MA...

Re: Removing Discolouration

Great, thanks for those comments. I may test a few things but I'm concerned about making it worse. The sun lamp idea is interesting - I don't have one or know anyone but I'll enquire. And I do have some potassium permanganate and I tried a little in the bridge area as a test but maybe I didn't get t...

Removing Discolouration

Hi, I'm re-finishing the top of this guitar and where the old pick guard has come off the top is discoloured, or rather it hasn't coloured while the rest of the guitar top has got darker. The pick guard is a sort of tiger stripe "tortoise shell" and you can see this in the discolouration. ...

Re: Converting right hand to left hand

Thanks for the feedback. Owner also wants the top refinished maybe with a new pguard. Bridge is narrower than the more typical Martin style and it slopes bass to treble so will need to make a new one as he wants to keep it close to original. Will let you know how it goes. AA

Converting right hand to left hand

A client has asked me to convert his Gibson Advanced Jumbo from right to left hand. Will require a new bridge and nut. Wondering what the issues might be. Is it likely to play/sound same? What should I be aware of to get a good result?

Re: Microphonic pickup help

Hey Steve, I'm chiming in a bit late to this story but I'm wondering why the pups squealed when you wired direct to the amp? I presumed you had removed from the guitar when you did this which would (again presumably) mean the rings were removed. Or were they still in the guitar and you just by-passe...

Re: Pick ups for 12 string electric

Thanks for the replies. I did a bit of searching and I didn't come up with anything that suggests a 12 st electric needs special pups. I guess step 1 is get the bridge and then step 2 is see what the string spread is and how it lines up with pole spread.

Pick ups for 12 string electric

Do 12 string electrics have different pick-ups to a 6 string electric. I'm thinking that the pole spacing may need to be a little wider. Appreciate any ideas.

Thanks for that advice Michael and Mario. Funny how both ideas has occurred to me at some level but I had just dismissed them and thought it wouldn't (or shouldn't) be that hard. Gotta love a learning experience

Neck rest problems on Framus Archtop

Hello I need some learned advice... I have a Framus Sorello arch top acoustic jazz guitar. The action was way high and the adjustable bridge was as low as it could go including I removed the height adjusting thumb wheels. So it needed a neck re-set. I removed the neck and got about the re-set. To ge...
